Day 1: What is QI?
We start off with an introduction into the key ingredients needed for change to be successful and a chance to consider where you’re strong in your approach to change and where your gaps might be.
We move on to thinking about what you are trying to achieve and how will you know if you’ve got there – being clear about your aim and how you measure what you’re doing. It isn’t a maths lesson but is about what data do you need to help you make changes. Then generating ideas and how you decide where to start (how do you prioritise) and then how you test first – quickly – so you can decide whether the change works or not, before you implement something that may take time and money to do.
We finish with an introduction to the Strengths Deployment Inventory, which will be the basis of understanding human dimensions of change on day 2.
Day 2: Human Dimensions of Change
We focus on understanding ourselves and working with others – what does it mean for me and how do I best work with other people?
How can we best articulate why we’re doing something and why we care (why it’s important to us) in a way to bring others with us and maybe encourage them to play an active role in what we’re trying to do.
We will also look at understanding why we do things and what motivates us, what triggers we and others have that make relationships not work as well as we want. This includes conflict and how that can impede collaboration with other individuals or groups.
We think about what this means for our project, and how we can engage others in order to achieve our aim.
Pre-work for delegates
We set pre-work before the programme. This is not onerous but designed to help you prepare for the forthcoming sessions. It is imperative that this is completed within the timescales set.
During day one…
We will spend time working with you on what a great aim would be, what measures you would choose to know if you’re making a difference and how to test that, to enable you to have a go in your workplace when you return.
Slides will be shared with you after each module. We will also provide hard copies of some materials (e.g. templates) that you will use during the module.
The programme is facilitated by members of the NHSE Sustainable Improvement Team, with improvement experts and clinical leads from our Faculty who have experience in facilitating change, designing reliable services and improving safety and quality.
