Introduction to COPD in primary care
‘In the UK, it is estimated that 3 million people have COPD, of whom 2 million are undiagnosed. COPD is treatable but not curable, and early diagnosis and treatment can help to slow the decline in lung function and increase the amount of time that people with COPD have to enjoy an active life’. NICE 2016
This study day is designed as an introduction to COPD for general practice nurses who are new this subject and wish to start to be involved in the managing patient with this common and debilitating condition.
To recognise that COPD is a common condition that often goes undiagnosed and to recognise symptoms and risk factors that might point towards a diagnosis of COPD.
To identify and practice the key components of assessing patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD for annual review.
To identify the goals for managing COPD and the key management interventions such as smoking cessation ,medication , pulmonary rehabilitation .
To discuss the management of acute exacerbations of COPD and strategies to reduce/prevent further exacerbations.
To recognise that COPD is a complex multi-systemic condition where co-morbidities are common and a holistic approach to management is essential.

10.00 – 11.00 Identifying those who are risk of COPD and the diagnostic process
11.20 – 12.00 Assessment and classification COPD.
( MRC score and CAT scores and the GOLD combined assessment tool)
12.00- 12.45 – The goals of management and key interventions including pharmacology
12.45 – 13.30 Lunch
13.30 – 14.30 Inhaler technique and management case studies
14.30 – 15.00 Holistic care and management of co-morbidities
15.00- 15.20 Tea
15.20 – 16.00 Managing acute exacerbation of COPD and future prevention strategies.
16.00 -16.15 Questions , evaluation and close

Turn off from the main Derriford Road and turn left into the Main Car Park which is the second turning on the left.
If you let us have your registration number prior to arriving you can just park in the Visitors car park we can register this for you on the system. Or you can also request a parking permit from us to print out and put in your car. You can then just park and make your way down to our building as indicated which is the first building on the left just off the roundabout. If you have not sent in your registration prior to arriving then come to our reception and we will give you a parking permit to put in your car.
When you get to the front door of our building please press 1 then the bell sign and we will buzz you in. Go through the doors to the left of the lift then take the next corridor on your right and go to the reception desk to sign in.
